In most situations, backhoe trenching is the most effective way to identify sites. When backhoe trenching is not possible, in urban areas for example, or when the potential depth for a site exceeds the range of mechanical excavation, we conduct hydraulic continuous-core sampling to identify sites. Coring in San Francisco. When archaeologists dig through the layers of earth carefully, the different soils and buried surfaces can be visually seen. Cores do the same thing, like inserting a straw into a layer cake, sometimes reaching 65 feet below surface. Each four-foot section of the core is pulled up in two-inch-diameter plastic liners, brought to the lab, sliced down the center, and splayed open to reveal the stratigraphic layers. Platform Mound. A platform mound is any earthwork or mound intended to support a structure or activity. The indigenous peoples of North America built substructure mounds for well over a thousand years starting in the Archaic period and continuing through the Woodland period.

My investigations yielded major discoveries about the past extent and frequency of volcanic flowage deposits from Mount Rainier volcano, allowed correlation of the most recent eruptions of Mount Hood with the observations of Lewis and Clark, and allowed dating of several prehistoric events at Mount Rainier. My studies of buried and submerged forests using radiocarbon and dendrochronology have helped reconstruct and evaluate paleoseismic history and have been cited in numerous published reports.

This work includes an inventory and analysis of landslides and landslide-dammed lakes, many of which likely record large ancient earthquakes. My work has allowed dating of more than 25 probable seismogenic landslide deposits in Washington State and dating of the Bonneville landslide in the Columbia River Gorge. C Evaluated and mapped Quaternary geologic deposits. D Evaluated subsurface information and surficial deposits for liquefaction susceptibility maps—includes mapping of landslides, and liquefaction features.

E Communicated proactively with the public, government officials, and media about geologic hazards issues and topics and conducting many public meetings. This work has included organizing-, and speaking at public meetings, training emergency preparedness officials regarding volcanic history and hazards, coauthoring pioneering response plans, and briefing government officials including the Governor, County and State executives and government leaders, and many representatives of schools as well as the general public and media.
