States parks that honor Senior Pass
We spent holidays and school vacations at popular beach towns like Ft. Myers Beach , St. Petersburg , and Daytona Beach. We stayed in giant hotels on the beach, soaked up the Florida sun, and feasted at all-you-can-eat seafood buffets. At the time it was great fun. But through the years my preferences have changed, and when we decided to come to Florida as full-time RVers, I was determined to avoid all of that. What we wanted instead was to experience the beauty of Florida without all the crowds and overhyped tourist traps. So we chose state parks over resort style RV parks , and laid back coastal towns over the popular beach cities. Our journey began in the panhandle.

Nice state park with full hookups, but infrastructure needs work We stayed here for two weeks in our fifth wheel this February. We also had family fly in and stay in one of the two bedroom cabins This is the most expensive state park we have stayed in and it fills up fast so reservations are a must. The campground is readily accessible, but you may not want to arrive early as we, along with many others were waiting for folks to vacate their spots up until about 1: Usually it is no problem getting in anywhere right after 1: The rangers were friendly and everything went smoothly.
There is no problem backing in and the pull-throughs are spacious. The concrete pads are really showing wear and other than in one section of the campground which looks as though it has been recently redone, the pads are all broken up.
Nice state park with full hookups, but… – Topsail Beach State Preserve
Portions of the site were acquired in the late ‘s and early ‘s. In a bond referendum, the citizens of Sarasota County voted to expand the beach by an additional feet. The results of the development of a dune restoration system in which includes five walkovers, has been very successful toward preserving and protecting the shoreline at this site. Camping, hiking, biking, tubing, beaches , canoeing, horseback riding, and events at music parks such as Spirit of Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida on the Suwannee River are just some of the activities available in Florida campgrounds and rv parks.
Meaher State Park is one of the best state parks we have stayed at. It had full hookups with sewer too! It was clean, had lots of room, and was located in a quiet, great place/58 Yelp reviews.
Visitors can learn more about this endangered animal through ranger interpretive programs. A chair accessible observation platform provides a view of the endangered mammals that gather at the spring during the cooler months of the year. From November through March, the manatees leave the colder waters of the St.
Johns River for the safety and comfort of the degree spring. The spring run, river and the surrounding swamps and uplands provided food, clothing, shelter and materials for tools and weapons. Snails gathered from sandbars were staple food for these people. Over the centuries, the discarded shells formed a massive mound. Johns River in search of resources of value to the Crown.

Most sites have “multi-use” trails, meaning they are suitable for hiking, biking or just strolling along enjoying nature. Fontainebleau and Fairview-Riverside State Parks, located on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain, are close to the Tammany Trace, a mile “rails to trails” conversion that goes from Slidell to Abita Springs. Equestrian trails Equestrian trails at State Parks sites are open to riders and their own horses. Certification of a clean Coggins test is required for all horses brought on State Park property.

Where to Stay Near Universal Studios In Orlando, people can find amusement and marine parks for adults and children, including Walt Disney World and SeaWorld, where they can ride thrill rides or see animals. Orlando and surrounding areas feature an assortment of dinner theater shows, boat tours, museums, sports complexes and wildlife centers for individuals with different interests. Weather Orlando has a tropical climate.
The city has warm weather throughout the year. November, December and February through May serve as some of the best times to go camping because they feature average temperatures in the 60s and 70s, according to Climate-Zone. July and August often see temperatures ranging from 80 degrees to 90 degrees F. Orlando is often humid during the summer. A majority of the RV parks in and near Orlando are open throughout the year.

Three years ago, the Florida Department of State launched the Florida Historic Golf Trail in an effort to showcase some of the finest tracks in the country which were built in the Sunshine State. The trail encompasses more than 50 quality golf courses, many of which were constructed in the s and s, an era dubbed by historians as the Golden Age of golf course architecture. Many renowned architects shared their talents in designing courses throughout the state.
The Sunshine State boasts nearly 1, golf facilities, which makes those tabbed for inclusion in the Florida Historic Golf Trail very special courses. Most of the courses have either retained much of their original character, or have been modified somewhat over the years. Opened in , the Biltmore Hotel complex originally featured two Donald Ross-designed hole golf courses.
During World War II, one of the courses was sold, and in , course architect Brian Silva completed a comprehensive restoration of the original track. Most impressive are the bunkers. Silva identified long-abandoned or grassed-over bunkers, and excavated them to their original depth. It, too, underwent a major renovation in In , the course became the third golf course in Florida to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

We have beaches, marshes, dunes, wetlands, hammocks, and tidal marshes to explore. While exploring you may see everything from an Osprey or Bald Eagle to a dolphin or a manatee. There’s a lot to do in and around the water too; from snorkeling to windsurfing, kayaking, or a tour in a glass bottom boat.

If bass fishing is your favorite recreational activity or even a part-time hobby, you will want to try angling on Lake Griffin. Lake Griffin State Park consists of over acres of woodlands and freshwater swamp. Developed in the late ‘s, the park has 40 campsites with water and electrical hook-ups, a boat ramp, picnic area, picnic shelter and nature trail.
While not directly on Lake Griffin, the boat ramp provides access to the lake via power boat or canoe. Swimming is not permitted in waters within the park. The park is home to the state’s fifth largest live oak tree. Located near the entrance of the park, this mammoth tree measures over feet tall and 10 feet in circumference. Be sure to visit this natural wonder.
Pedestrian access is not provided, but if you have a boat or rent a canoe you can observe a wide variety of wildlife in their natural setting.

That campground is just across the street from the beach. They are also currently adding a swimming pool and tennis courts. Should be a fun camping spot this spring and summer.
The Florida Historic Golf Trail Includes Over 50 Courses
Are there trails for biking? Fort De Soto offers a paved 6. Where can you swim? Swimming is only permitted from the beach. Please check signs for lifeguard availability seasonal.
